The story of "Xue Gang Against the Tang" goes that in Tang Dynasty, Xue Dingshan, son of Xue Rengui, was victimized by the treacherous minister Zhangtai (son of Zhang Shigui), and his whole family was beheaded. Xue Dingshan's eldest son, Xue Mang, was caught up in feudal morality and became a victim of the feudal system. Xue Dingshan's third son, Xue Gang, who was a strong character and refused to give in, finally rose to power.
